(New York) The Chinese People’s Federation for World Peace-USA held a Lunar New Year celebration event, “Celebrating the New Year with Calligraphy and Spreading Blessings of Filial Piety,” at the Chatham Square Library in Chinatown on Wednesday, February 18th, at 1 PM. While celebrating the Lunar New Year, the event allowed students to experience the essence of Chinese culture through calligraphy. More than 50 students and their parents participated enthusiastically in a warm and lively atmosphere.
The event began with a welcome speech from Amy Yang, President of the Chinese People’s Federation for World Peace-USA (CPFWP-USA) who encouraged everyone to continue supporting the CPFWP-USA mission to promote the culture of filial piety. Mr. Justin Yu, Founder of the New York Donghua Association, delivered New Year’s greetings, wishing everyone “immediate happiness” in the new year. Mr. Zhuohuai Cen, the Chairman of Chinese Art Association praised the students’ active participation and encouraged them to develop beautiful calligraphy skills. Mei Zhencai, chairman of the World Mei Clan Association and President of Chinese Art Association, provided an in-depth explanation of the cultural connotations of the Chinese character “孝” (filial piety), vividly illustrating the spirit of filial piety with the example of “a child carrying his parents on his back.” Furthermore, Chen Zuozhou, Executive Director of the Chinatown Community Development Corporation, stated that this year marks a significant milestone in the development history of Chinatown, with its 200th anniversary celebration approaching, and expressed gratitude to the CPFWP-USA for its long-term commitment to preserving and promoting Chinese culture.
Following the speeches, calligraphy teaching and hands-on activities commenced. Four characters—”孝” (filial piety), “天” (heaven), “心” (heart), and “马” (horse)—were specially selected for students to practice writing. Calligrapher Wu Zhuohuai from the Chinese Art Association provided on-site guidance on pen grip and brushstroke techniques, and the students focused intently on learning and writing. Mr. Wu also wrote Spring Festival couplets on-site, adding a festive atmosphere to the event.
After the calligraphy activity, a birthday celebration for those born in January and February and a raffle for all participants were held. The CPFWP-USA prepared New Year’s lucky bags for each participant. The venue was decorated with festive Chinese New Year decorations, allowing parents and children to spend a warm and unforgettable time together.
