5th Filial Heart 3-Generation Family Award Ceremony

On May 16, the Chinese People’s Federation for World Peace-USA (CPFWP-USA) held the “Filial Heart Three-Generation Family Awards Ceremony” at Confucius Plaza in New York’s Chinatown, honoring families across the United States who exemplify filial piety through harmonious three-generation households. Each award-winning family received a crystal trophy in recognition of their dedication to family values and respect for elders.

A total of ten families were honored this year. Award recipients included former 2024–2025 President of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, Sam Lin; Board Director of the New York Cultural Art Association, KoHung Wu; senior engineer and calligrapher Zhou-Huai Wu; Volunteer Manager of the Chinatown East Neighborhood Council, Xue Ying Zhang; former New Hope School Principal Dr. Robert Beebe; and former Bridgeport Hope School Principal Elizabeth Deshotel, among other community leaders.

President Sam Lin demonstrated exceptional devotion in caring for his mother, arranging business-class travel between Taipei and New York and sharing the responsibility of caring for his mother with his siblings. Director KoHung Wu devoted decades to the restaurant industry, and today his children continue the family business while maintaining a three-generation household under one roof. The Zhuo-Huai Wu family lives together harmoniously across three generations, with younger family members caring attentively for their elders, allowing them to enjoy a peaceful and happy retirement. Director Xue Ying Zhang upholds the family tradition that “filial piety is the foremost of all virtues,” teaching gratitude and respect to younger generations through both words and personal examples. Former principals Dr. Robert Beebe and Elizabeth Deshotel have dedicated their lives to education while also placing strong emphasis on maintaining loving and harmonious family relationships.

Amy Yang, President of the CPFWP-USA, expressed gratitude to all the honored families and used the metaphor of a mother tree and its branches to illustrate the interdependent relationship between parents and children. She also introduced the upcoming Chinese World Assembly to be held in Korea in 2027 and invited community members from all sectors to participate.

New York State Assemblymember, Assembly District 65, Hon. Grace Lee attended the event and delivered congratulatory remarks and presented a certificate of recognition to the CPFWP-USA, commending its efforts in promoting filial piety and family value. Other speakers included Professor Thomas Hwang, International President of the CPFWP; Gene Mei, Global President of the Mei Clan Association and President of the New York Cultural Art Association, Founder of the Chinatown East Neighborhood Council; and Dr. Katarina Connery, President of Women’s Federation for World Peace USA. They expressed that having three generations living together is not easy to achieve, and that the CPFWP-USA’s advocacy of filial piety within the community is highly meaningful in promoting a healthier and more harmonious society.

In her keynote address, Dr. Katarina Connery shared that through honoring and serving our parents, we can expand this spirit to our communities and nations by showing respect to teachers, leaders, and elders, thereby helping build a more peaceful world.

The program also featured dance performances by Linda Phoenix Dancing Group. President Amy Yang’s entire family participated in the event, including her son, Takayoshi Yang who served as the master of ceremonies, and her husband, Andrew Miyamoto, who performed the Korean song “Thank You”, adding warmth and inspiration to the gathering.

Following the awards ceremony, participating couples joined together in a “Filial Heart Cheers Ceremony,” pledging to uphold family values and practice a culture of filial love. The scene was especially moving and beautiful.

Approximately 100 people attended the event in person, alongside a global livestream audience. Special thanks were extended to the New York Cultural Art Association, Tendy Liu Art Center, and CoCo Bubble Tea for their support of the event.
